After more than a year of work by a community-led Task Force and Implementation Team, the City of Boulder will interview eighteen finalists interested in serving on a civilian Police Oversight Panel.
The City of Boulder’s Police Oversight Panel Selection Committee will be holding interviews for prospective panel members from Thursday, January 14 through Wednesday, January 20. The interviews will be viewable live on-line and will also be recorded and posted on the city’s Police Oversight website. A total of fifty-three community members expressed interest in serving on the panel. A collaborative review of all applicants was conducted by the original Implementation Team members who developed the Police Oversight ordinance, joined by a representative from The Islamic Center of Boulder County and the NAACP of Boulder County.
The panel will be composed of nine community members, two of whom shall be students in an institution of higher learning. Student panel members will serve one-year terms, while non-student panel members will serve three-year terms. Selected panel members will have a connection to Boulder but are not required to be residents of the city.
The Selection Committee will strive to include people identifying as a person of color, notably African American, Latinx, Asian and/or Indigenous, as at least half of the members of the police oversight panel. Preference will be given to individuals who are multilingual. In addition, the selection committee will strive to include a person with a disability, a person experiencing homelessness or having such lived experience, a person identifying as LGBTQ+, and a person who has experienced incarceration. Members of the Police Oversight Panel cannot be a current City employee nor an immediate family member of a current City employee. Police oversight panel members will participate in a training program to be developed by the Independent Police Monitor.
Boulder’s Police Oversight Panel is empowered to review complaint investigation files and make disciplinary, policy, and training recommendations to the Boulder Police Department. Once established the panel will hold monthly public meetings.
